How to Transfer Your LIC Policy to Another Branch
Moved cities? Here is the exact process to transfer your LIC policy to a branch closer to your new home — online and offline methods both covered.
Transferring an LIC policy from one branch to another is a straightforward process, but it involves specific steps and documentation. I have helped several clients who moved cities and needed their policy serviced closer to their new home.
**When do you need to transfer**
You need to transfer your LIC policy if you have moved to a different city and want the servicing branch to be closer to your current residence. Premium payment, loan queries, and claim settlement are all easier when handled by a local branch.
Note that you do not need to transfer just to pay premiums — LIC allows premium payment online, at any branch across India, and through various electronic modes regardless of where the policy is registered. The transfer is mainly useful for ongoing servicing and claim processing.
**Documents required**
To transfer your LIC policy, you will need: 1. A signed written request letter addressed to the Branch Manager of your current servicing branch 2. Original policy bond (or a declaration if the original is lost) 3. A self-attested copy of your address proof at the new location (Aadhaar, passport, or utility bill) 4. A self-attested copy of your identity proof 5. Surrender value pass book or premium payment receipt (if applicable)
**Step-by-step process**
Step 1: Visit your current LIC branch (the branch where your policy is registered) with the above documents.
Step 2: Submit a written transfer request. The format is not standardized, but it should include your name, policy number, current branch name, the name and address of the branch you want the policy transferred to, and your reason for transfer.
Step 3: The current branch will process the request internally and forward the policy file to the new branch. This typically takes 10 to 15 working days.
Step 4: You will receive an intimation from the new branch confirming that the policy has been received and is now registered in their system.
**Online transfer option**
LIC's online portal (licindia.in) and the LIC mobile app allow you to submit a transfer request without visiting the branch. You will need your policy number and registered mobile number for authentication. The online option is faster and the processing time is similar — 10 to 15 working days.
**What does not change after transfer**
The policy terms, Sum Assured, premium amount, maturity date, and nominee details remain unchanged. Only the servicing branch changes.
**What to do if you have multiple policies**
If you have more than one policy at the same branch, you can request all of them to be transferred together in a single application.
**My suggestion**
If you have moved cities, do transfer the policy. Claim settlement is smoother when the servicing branch knows you personally. I have seen cases where unfamiliar policyholders faced unnecessary delays at a distant branch that was not familiar with their history.
