Insurance Basics

Bima Sugam is IRDAI's unified digital platform for insurance in India. The goal is simple: one place to buy, manage, and claim all your insurance policies — regardless of which insurer you bought them from. Think of it as a single digital account for all your insurance, similar to what CDSL/NSDL is for mutual funds and shares.

**Current status of Bima Sugam**

As of mid-2026, Bima Sugam has launched in phases. The registration process is live, and some insurers have integrated their policy data. Full functionality — including cross-insurer claim filing — is being rolled out progressively.

**How to register on Bima Sugam**

Step 1: Visit the official Bima Sugam portal (bimasugam.com or through IRDAI's official website).

Step 2: Click on Register as Policyholder.

Step 3: Enter your mobile number linked to Aadhaar and verify with OTP.

Step 4: Complete the eKYC process using your Aadhaar. The platform uses UIDAI's authentication infrastructure.

Step 5: Your account is created. All insurance policies linked to your PAN and Aadhaar will be fetched and displayed in your account over the next few days as insurers complete the data integration.

**What you can do on Bima Sugam**

Once registered, you can view all your insurance policies — life, health, motor, and general — in one dashboard. You can download policy documents, pay premiums for integrated insurers, update nominee details, and initiate certain service requests.

**Linking your LIC policies**

If your LIC policies are already Aadhaar-linked, they should automatically appear in your Bima Sugam account after LIC's integration with the platform is complete. If they do not appear, you can manually link them using the policy number and insurer name.

**Is it mandatory to register?**

No, registration is currently voluntary. However, IRDAI has indicated that Bima Sugam will eventually become the central registry for all insurance policies in India. Registering now gets you familiar with the platform and makes future policy management easier.

**Benefits for your nominee**

One of the most practical benefits of Bima Sugam is for nominees. When a policyholder dies, the nominee can log in to Bima Sugam and see all the insurance policies the deceased held — including ones the family may not have known about. This prevents insurance policies from lapsing unclaimed.

I always encourage my clients to register on Bima Sugam and also inform their family members of the platform. It is a significant step toward simplifying insurance management in India.
