Arogya Sanjeevani is a basic, affordable plan mandated by IRDAI. Star Health Comprehensive has more features. Here's when each makes sense.

IRDAI introduced Arogya Sanjeevani as a standard health insurance product in 2020. Every insurer must offer it with identical features, making it easy to compare across companies purely on price. Star Health offers its own Arogya Sanjeevani as well as the premium Star Comprehensive plan. Here's when each makes sense.

Arogya Sanjeevani: A standard plan with a cover range of Rs 1 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. Basic inpatient hospitalization, 30-day pre and 60-day post hospitalization. 5 percent co-payment on every claim. Room rent capped at 2 percent of sum insured per day. Day care procedures covered. No room upgrades, no OPD, no consumable cover. It's the most affordable option for someone who wants basic hospitalization cover and nothing else.

Star Health Comprehensive: A premium plan covering inpatient, OPD (at network hospitals), home care, mental health treatment, modern treatments, organ donor expenses, and robotic surgeries. No room rent sub-limit. No mandatory co-payment. No disease-specific sub-limits. Sum insured options from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 1 crore.

Premium comparison for a 35-year-old, individual cover. Arogya Sanjeevani at Rs 5 lakh: approximately Rs 4,500 to Rs 5,500 per year. Star Comprehensive at Rs 5 lakh: approximately Rs 7,000 to Rs 9,000 per year. The gap is about Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000 per year.

My recommendation: If budget is very tight, start with Arogya Sanjeevani and upgrade later. If you can afford the extra Rs 300 per month, Star Comprehensive's benefits, especially OPD and no co-payment, make it worth the additional cost for most families in Gorakhpur.

For families with members above 50, always choose the comprehensive plan. The co-payment in Arogya Sanjeevani becomes significant with larger claims.
