Choosing a health insurance policy is one of the most important financial decisions a family makes. Here is my honest comparison for 2026.
Hospital Network: Star Health has over 14,000 cashless hospitals. HDFC Ergo has approximately 13,000 plus. Both cover major Gorakhpur hospitals including BRD Medical College, Sahara, and Regency. Near-tie in our region.
Star Health Family Health Optima (Rs 5 lakh, family of 4, 35-year-old proposer): Approximately Rs 16,500 to 19,000/year. Features: automatic sum restoration once per year, 10% cumulative bonus per claim-free year, in-house claim settlement team with no TPA.
HDFC Ergo Optima Restore (same profile): Approximately Rs 14,500 to 17,500/year. Key differentiator: the Restore benefit restores the entire base sum insured after the first claim, automatically, even for the same illness. Cumulative bonus: 50% for first claim-free year.
Claim process: Star Health uses an in-house team with no TPA - generally faster. HDFC Ergo uses TPA for some claims, which can slow processing.
My verdict: For most Gorakhpur families, I recommend Star Health for faster claim settlement and slightly better tier-2 city network. However, HDFC Ergo Restore benefit is genuinely excellent for families with a history of recurring illnesses.
