Planning retirement income is the most important financial task for anyone in their 40s. PPF or LIC pension - the honest answer is they serve different purposes and combining both is often optimal.
Public Provident Fund: Current rate 7.1% per annum (government-set). 15-year lock-in with partial withdrawal from year 7. Fully EEE tax status - exempt at investment (Section 80C), exempt on interest, exempt on maturity. Maximum annual contribution Rs 1.5 lakh. Zero risk.
LIC Pension Plans such as Jeevan Akshay VII and New Jeevan Shanti: Immediate or deferred annuity plans. Invest a lump sum at retirement, LIC pays fixed monthly income for life. Annuity rate for a 60-year-old today: approximately 6 to 6.5% on a joint-life basis. The annuity is taxable as income.
They work in sequence: build with PPF, convert with pension. Real numbers for a 40-year-old contributing Rs 1.5 lakh/year to PPF for 20 years at 7.1%: approximately Rs 65 lakh by age 60. Investing Rs 65 lakh in LIC Jeevan Akshay at 6.2% gives approximately Rs 33,800/month for life for both spouses.
My recommendation: Max your PPF every year for Section 80C saving plus guaranteed returns. At retirement, use LIC pension plan to convert part of the corpus into guaranteed income. Use the remaining corpus in balanced mutual funds for inflation protection.
