How to File a Life Insurance Claim: Step by Step
Filing a life insurance claim is simpler than most people think, if you know the steps. After helping hundreds of families through this process, here is everything you need to do when the time comes.
In my 31 years as an insurance advisor, helping families through the claims process is one of the most important things I do. A claim is when a family needs their insurance policy to deliver on its promise, and my job is to make sure that happens smoothly.
Here are the steps to file a death claim on an LIC policy:
Step 1: Inform LIC immediately. The nominee or family member should contact the LIC branch where the policy was serviced, or call LIC's helpline at 022-68276827. Inform them of the policyholder's death as soon as possible. There is no strict deadline for death claims, but the sooner you begin, the sooner the family receives the funds.
Step 2: Gather the required documents. The core documents you need are: the original policy bond, the death certificate issued by the municipality or gram panchayat, a duly filled claim form (Form 3783 or 3784, available at any LIC branch), identity and address proof of the nominee, cancelled cheque for NEFT payment, and the NEFT mandate form. If the death was accidental, you will also need the FIR, post-mortem report, and hospital records.
Step 3: Submit the claim. Visit the nearest LIC branch with all documents. The branch manager or development officer will verify the documents and issue an acknowledgement. If I am your advisor, call me first, I will accompany you or guide you through the documentation step by step.
Step 4: LIC verification. LIC typically takes 30 to 60 days to process a straightforward death claim. For claims above ₹25 lakh, there may be an investigation. This is routine, do not be alarmed.
Step 5: Receive the settlement. Once approved, LIC directly transfers the claim amount to the nominee's bank account via NEFT. The full sum assured plus accrued bonus is paid.
Common reasons claims get delayed: incorrect nominee details, documents that do not match policy records, or missing the death certificate. All of these are preventable. I always advise my policyholders to keep their documents organised and their nominee details updated.
One important point: as your advisor, I am available to help your family through every step of this process, even if it is years after you took the policy. Call my family members too. They should have my number saved as 'Insurance Advisor, Ajay Poddar' at 9415313434.
